A Phenomenal Mother

In November of 2019, I had the opportunity to nominate my mother for Sister Spokesman’s “Celebrating Moms of All Ages”. I had to let everyone know about the amazing woman that I have been blessed with. My mother, along with many other amazing mothers were honored in December.

My mother has played so many roles in my life. She is my best friend, my biggest cheerleader, comforter, truth-teller, motivator, uplifter, caregiver, and on and on. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without her. She encouraged and supported me when I wanted to leave the “good-paying” job that I had to pursue my dream of becoming a Cancer Doula and owning my own business. She simply said, “If you are not happy you need to do what makes you happy. You achieved all of your other goals, you can, and you will achieve this one!” That was it! No questions, no are you crazy, no are you sure you want to leave that “good-paying” job. She reminded me of what I went through with cancer and she said that I owe it to myself to at least try. She has supported me so much along this journey. On the days when I want to give up, she encourages me to keep going. She reminds me of the WHY. She reminds me to look how far I have come, from idea to action to results.

Below is the short paragraph that I submitted describe what lead me to nominate my mother.

“I am nominating my mother, Lois Dendy. There are many reasons why I could nominate her, but there is one specific reason that I would like to spotlight. In 2011, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. When I told my mother, she said, “I am with you until the end baby girl.” She did exactly that! My mother stood by my side the whole time and even after. She took off work and went to every chemotherapy treatment with me except for one, but even then, she made sure that I had someone to go with me. After my treatments, she would come and stay with me for a couple of days before going back to work to make sure that I did not have any bad reactions and just to be there with me when I was not feeling well. She did this for six months straight! She made sure that I had what I needed. Whenever I had an appetite, she would cook whatever I wanted, which was usually red beans and rice. She would come to my home and clean. She would go on different outings with me when I wanted to get out of the house. She helped me to stay positive and uplifted. I knew that my mother was afraid, but she did not show it. She did not complain. She was my rock. She did not crumble. Years later, she said that the hardest part was not being able to do anything. What she did not realize is that she did everything and then some. Her actions helped to keep me alive and give me hope. Her love helped me heal!”

Happy Mother’s Day to my mother and all of the wonderful mothers!

Honor your mother every day not just on Mother’s Day. Think about what they went through to bring us into the world! ❤️💐

Blessings,

Talaya
