Lessons from a Hodgkin's Survivor

Rick Czaplewski, Hodgkin's Disease (Lymphoma) Survivor, Professional Speaker, Author

Welcome, readers! In this post, I dive deep into an inspirational and heartfelt conversation from Navigating Cancer TOGETHER. The episode features Rick Czaplewski, a 28-year Hodgkin's disease survivor, author, and professional speaker. Rick shares his incredible journey of overcoming cancer, his recovery, his achievements post-diagnosis, and how he has transformed his life.

The Early Diagnosis

Rick's journey began in college when he received the shocking news from his parents in his dorm room: "You have Hodgkin's disease. Cancer." Despite the gravity of the situation, Rick faced cancer in silence during his freshman year, leveraging youthful optimism and sheer determination to navigate his treatments while keeping up with college life.

Relapse and Resilience

18 months later, Rick faced a relapse, which demanded more intensive treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation. Unlike the first time, he embraced the reality of cancer more fully, understanding the seriousness of his condition and seeking a balance between facing cancer head-on and maintaining his normalcy.

Finding Joy in Life

Despite his struggles, Rick found joy in living. He switched careers to become a speaker and executive trainer, cherishing his newfound independence and spending meaningful time with his son, Lance. Rick also pursued his love for music, attending numerous concerts and events. His zest for life only grew stronger, becoming a key element in his recovery and ongoing health.

Physical and Emotional Healing

Rick's physical recovery was complemented by his emotional journey, where he found therapeutic solace in rigorous physical activities. Whether it was climbing Mount Rainier, or swimming from Alcatraz to the shore, these feats represented not only physical triumphs but also profound emotional victories over his cancer.

Long-Term Effects and Advocacy

Long-term, Rick has faced various side effects from his treatment, such as aortic valve stenosis. Nonetheless, he advocates for the importance of physical activity and mental health support for cancer survivors. He highlights the need for comprehensive post-treatment care, suggesting that medical and emotional support networks are crucial for long-term wellness.

Writing as Legacy

Rick penned his memoir, "Better Dirty Than Done," initially meant for his son, Lance. It captures his life’s stories, the harsh realities of cancer, the joyous moments, and everything in between. Writing became not just a medium of expression but a legacy piece, culminating in accolades like being a finalist in the National Indie Excellence Awards.

Conclusion

Rick’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, the significance of seeking joy amid adversity, and the importance of using one's struggles to inspire and help others. His story is a beacon of hope for anyone facing similar obstacles, encouraging them to believe in their capacity to overcome and thrive.

If you or someone you know is navigating a cancer diagnosis, remember Rick’s powerful message: “You can do it. Yes, you can.”
