What Are the Key Differences Between Alternative, Complementary, and Integrative Therapies?
A Brief Overview
When it comes to healthcare, there are many options beyond traditional Western medicine. Alternative, complementary, and integrative therapies (ACIT) offer a diverse range of approaches that can provide additional support for physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Understanding the terms
Alternative Therapies: These are used instead of conventional treatments. Examples include homeopathy, acupuncture, and herbal remedies.
Complementary Therapies: These are used in addition to conventional treatments. Examples include massage, meditation, and yoga.
Integrative Therapies: This approach combines conventional medicine with complementary therapies that are safe and effective.
Why It's Important to Understand the Differences
Informed Decision-Making: Knowing the distinctions between these terms can help you make informed choices about your healthcare. You can determine whether a therapy is a suitable replacement or complement to conventional treatments based on your specific needs and preferences.
Avoiding Misconceptions: Understanding the differences can help dispel common misconceptions about ACIT. For example, it's important to recognize that not all alternative therapies are based on scientific evidence, while some complementary therapies have been shown to have beneficial effects.
Effective Treatment: By choosing the right approach, you can increase the likelihood of achieving your desired health outcomes. Whether you're seeking symptom relief, improved quality of life, or a more holistic approach to healthcare, understanding the differences between ACIT can help you find the best options for your needs.
Key Consideration for Alternative, complementary, and integrative therapies
Safety and Effectiveness: Many ACIT practices are safe and effective. However, it's essential to research individual therapies and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment.
Scientific Evidence: Some ACIT practices have a strong scientific foundation, while others may have limited or no research support. It's important to consider the level of evidence available when making decisions.
Qualified Practitioners: Ensure that any practitioner you choose is qualified and experienced in the specific therapy you're interested in.
A Note on Alternative Therapies
It's important to note that research has shown that using alternative therapies in place of conventional therapies that are considered curative or otherwise effective could be dangerous. This is particularly true for serious conditions like cancer.
My Personal Experience
During my cancer journey in 2011, I was not presented with information about complementary and integrative therapies. I had to comb through and research what little information was available.
Journaling
Journaling has always been a part of my daily routine. It was invaluable during my cancer journey, providing a safe space to process my emotions and thoughts. Journaling is considered an expressive therapy. I benefited greatly from journaling during that very tough time because it allowed me to think through and work through the emotions that I was feeling as a result of my cancer diagnosis. Often, I felt like no one understood what I was going through, and I did not want to bombard others with my heavy feelings and emotions. I knew that I was safe expressing my feelings in my journal. No judgement!
Meditation, Mindfulness, Deep Breathing
Meditation became a daily practice for me, teaching me so much about myself and providing a sense of calm. Initially, I found it difficult to quiet my mind and focus on the present moment, but by starting with short periods and gradually increasing the duration, I was able to overcome this challenge. I also noticed the benefits my body was experiencing, such as less tension and heaviness. It helped me gain inner peace and quiet my mind. One of the worst forms of my treatment was radiation. Meditation helped tremendously before and during radiation. It played a crucial role in helping me combat the debilitating side effects, such as extreme fatigue, caused by chemotherapy and radiation.
Deep breathing came in handy when I had to go to a doctor's appointment, get a scan, or was waiting for a test result. It helped my body relax, and it helped me feel a sense of control even during situations when I had very little control. It is something that I could do anywhere, at any time to take care of myself.
Massage
Massage is considered a manipulation and body-based practice. It helped me to release the tension and toxins in my body, especially after I completed treatment. It also helped me to think less about what my body and I had been through. I felt like with each massage, the toxins and strain of what I had been through were leaving my body. I always looked forward to getting a massage because I knew a good night's sleep would follow.
